Or watch the whales cavort at sunset while you enjoy a picnic on the rocks. It may seem they are showing off just for you!

Sail some of the best waters in the world. Canoe or kayak along the shores and spy on the rivers otters as they spy on you. Cruise through the Canadian Gulf Islands, camp on a deserted beach.
Boat or ferry to Victoria and enjoy lunch or overnight in another country!
Hike Mt. Young or Mt. Finlayson. Absorb the expansive vistas throughout the islands.
Pick blackberries until your fingers are purple and you finally have more in your bucket than in your belly.

Play at South Beach. Build a shack of driftwood and make it home for a day. Dare to jump in the water for a few seconds. Cookout around a fire with friends and talk until the stars light the sky. Walk along the pebble shore, alone or with a friend, and let your worries ebb with the tides. Sit for a while and watch a pair of eagles fish...and see how close they will get to you.

Beach comb after storms. Tell the kids if they find a piece of red beach glass that you will give them a dollar.
Startle the black and brown rabbits in American Camp as you walk the many trails. Expect to see deer daily. Continue to express delight as fox, eagles, hawks, wild turkey, seals, sea lions, river otters, pass into view. Know that you may be one of few to spy an elusive mink or flying squirrel.
Social: Wave or say hello to people each time you go to town. Be prepared to visit at the grocery store and post office. Try out for the community theater. Experience Shakespeare on the green. Go to a poetry reading at the library, or open mike at the Flying Burrito. Try karaoke at a local club. Enter the Einer Nielsen Salmon Tournament each fall.Dance at the Dance Workshop. Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Bellydance, Ballroom, and Western Swing. Try out contra dance on weekends. Dance the summer nights away at Roche Harbor.
Go bowling. Play Trivia Pursuits weekly at a local club. Try bingo night. Enter the Eihner Neilsen Salmon Tournament each fall.
Join in the fun of the County Fairenter a photograph, a painting, or your prize hen, and enjoy seeing folks you rarely see.
Join the Health Club. Learn yoga through the variety of teachers and studios available. Join the Yacht Club, the Sailing Club, the Lions Club, a Book Club, or a Study group. Support the Senior Center, the Chamber of Commerce and/or the Kiwanis.
Catch dungeoness crabs in your own crab pot and invite your friends for a feast. Have barbeques and test out the lastest salmon recipes.
Check out the Community Theater for a variety of shows. Talented mainland artists perform year round. Local plays, opera, musical, and chamber music to delight and amaze audiences with the high level of talent from the community. Enjoy the Festival of Trees each Holiday season.
Easter egg hunts, the Shaw Island Classic Sailing Race, the options to join in with others abound. You don't want company? Turn back to nature!
Now you have been here a while and you want to "get away": Catch the ferry to the mainland to see what you have been missing. Go skiing, take in a show, shop. Make "going to the city" a treat! After a day or so away, relax on the ferry knowing you are heading home.
Do you still want a challenge? Learn to fly. Take up diving. Take a cooking class. Paint or photograph the beauty at your doorstep. Write about it. Do something you have always wished you had time for.
